Letter from the President

As winter entered it’s fifth (and hopefully final) phase, before begrudgingly allowing Spring to arrive, I found myself asking about perseverance and persistence. I had the opportunity to support a friend they pursued a government post. Days, weeks and months were spent working behind the scenes, meeting people, holding events and connecting with others. Earlier this month, everyone headed to the polls and the hard work came to an end. While the results of the election were extremely close, she found herself on the wrong side of the final tally. It certainly wasn’t the final outcome she had poured her heart and soul into for the past 27 weeks. It was painful; as defeat always is. I made sure she knew that this experience doesn’t define her, it merely adds to her character. But, it is in those moments of uncomfortableness that we discover a piece that we may not have known existed.

As the sting disappears with time, it strikes me that growth really comes in these ways. It pushes us to keep going, even when we don’t think it possible. It is that persistence that make us who we are.

Tapping into Digital Influencers - May 15

Digital influencers are the new word-of-mouth experts across a variety of industries. But how do you get your business or clients into their conversations? Find out at our program meeting on May 15, where we'll be joined by Sam Burns, a public relations assistant account executive and digital influencer expert with Boelter + Lincoln in Milwaukee. Sam will delve into strategies to research, evaluate, and leverage a wide variety of influencer partnerships. Sam will also highlight best practices for negotiations and content creation, while learning how to balance control and creativity when engaging with influencers.

Sam works with a variety of clients at Boelter + Lincoln, including Pabst Milwaukee Brewery, Door County Visitor Bureau, and EAA. He has extensive experience in creating and executing digital influencer programs for brands, as well as social media and public relations campaigns. He has spoken on the topic of digital influencers to a variety of university and professional groups, most recently presenting to the Wisconsin Association of Convention & Visitor Bureaus. A graduate of Carroll University, Sam is based in Milwaukee where he is an active member of the PRSA Southeast Wisconsin Chapter.

TAKE 5 - Podcasting Edition

If you weren't at last month's program, you missed a good one! We were lucky to have Dan Trzinski, owner of Platypus Advertising + Design, talk about the podcasting! Dan is a nationally respected multi-media strategist and marketing researcher and host of Platypus’ podcast, Brandstorm. Here are 5 key takeaways on the topic:

  1. It's not new: The format (as we know it) turns 14 this year, but you can argue that it goes waaaaay back to the 1930s (the golden age of radio and its serial dramas).
  2. It’s still growing – fast: According to Edison Research, 11% of Americans said they listened to podcasts in 2015. Today, it’s 44%! (With the vast majority falling in the 18-44 age range)
  3. It’s the multi-task medium: It’s the one form of content you can absorb while still accomplishing other tasks: driving, walking the dog, watching a game, etc.
  4. It’s affordable: Audio quality matters, but less than $100 in equipment will get you great sound.
  5. It’s shareable: People won’t usually stumble upon your podcasts, so you have to promote them. Social is a really effective way to share a podcast – especially when you have a guest with a big social following!

Ethics Corner

Ethics: All I really need to know I learned in Kindergarten

It’s Earth Day 2018 as I write this.

It occurs to me that the personal and social responsibility ethos that brought us Earth Day are not limited to that event. They are part of larger system of ethics, a code, if you will, that informs our roles as public relations practitioners and our lives as stewards of the planet. It’s the Kindergarten Code.

 So in a slight departure from my usual focus on the PRSA Code of Ethics, I want to call attention to another set of guidelines that will help us as professionals AND as citizens of Earth.

 The Kindergarten Code was made popular by author and poet Robert Fulghum in his best-selling book All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten (1986: Random House). You can (and I recommend you do) read these in their annotated form in his book. If you’re not a reader (gasp!), here’s the five-minute YouTube version. Here is a summary of the code’s tenets:

Share everything. / Play fair. / Don't hit people. / Put things back where you found them. / Clean up your own mess. / Don't take things that aren't yours. / Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody. / Wash your hands before you eat. / Flush. / Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. / Live a balanced life -- Learn some and think some, and draw and paint and sing and dance, and play and work everyday some. / Take a nap every afternoon. / When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together. / Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seeds in the Styrofoam cup. The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. / Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup -- they all die. So do we. / And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned -- the biggest word of all -- LOOK.

 “Of course, it wasn’t literally all you really needed to know,” writes Fulghum in the preface of the book’s 25th anniversary edition. “Certainly not. But if you didn’t get this basic stuff to begin with, you and society will pay a heavy price for your failure. If you did learn it and do practice it, then all the rest of what you needed to know has a lasting foundation.”

Let’s build on that foundation, make every day Earth Day and use the lessons of the Kindergarten Code to make the world just a little better every day.
